David Borsu: That reminds me
Dance(able) music exploded into about a hundred different subgenres during the 90s, when I wasn't paying attention due to the rigors of early fatherhood. Now I'm catching up and trying to learn the differences between them. From what I can tell, "broken beat" is like "breakbeat" (i.e. 4/4 beat with empasis on beats 2 and 4) but with the beats sort of skewed, or sideways, or skitter-skattered, or minced. David Borsu's "East Beaumont," from 2006, seems a good example of broken beat, but what struck me most about the tune was the synths: why is anyone still using that cheesy, outdated synth sound? It sounds like something out of the 80s, like Tyrone Brunson's "The Smurf." "East Beaumont" could even be a cubist interpretation of "The Smurf." Now that I've made that connection, the two songs will be forever linked in my mind, so I'll link them in the blog as well:
