Steampunk music?

Comments

[this is good]
(Opinion) I really don't think that steampunk, unlike some other subcultures, have ever really relied on their own identity through music. I feel it taking its queues from other subcultures and music, such as the goth scene, more than creating it's own - something the steampunk scene desires to separate "them" from the other subcultures. It's not uncommon to go to a gothic, convention, or metal event and see cosplay and personal attire with a direct influence from steampunk. (see my recent blog and pictures as an example)

Many acts incorporate the steampunk aesthetic such as (last.fm links) Dr. Steel, Emilie Autumn, Voltaire, and of course, Abney Park but that's been the key aspect defining steampunk in music - aesthetic. Steampunk has been an art form of the eyes before music for a greater part of it's history. Wither an acts can take the style of steampunk and create a common "sound" such as Hip Hop, Rock, or other music classes still remains to be seen especially consider the diversity that the four "steampunk(ish)" bands don't have much in common except for style.

Good article...Made me think and had interesting read & videos.

Jason, thank you for the thoughtful comments. I have started following your blog and am enjoying the scene vicariously. I still wish a real steampunk musical style would emerge; I am imagining Dark Cabaret such as Dresden Dolls or Man Man with industrial percussion a la Test Dept, or power tools as in Einsturzende Neubauten or Baltimore's mighty Motor Morons.
