More soundalikes: Kiss does pastiche
It was on the same radio station and in the same year as my belated exposure to Wet Willie's "Keep On Smilin'" that I first heard "Hard Luck Woman", and that one at least was easy to track down to Kiss. (Again, how did I miss it in 1976? Beats me.) It sounded to me like a blatant attempt to cash in on Rod Stewart's popularity. And sure enough, Paul Stanley wrote the song to sell to Rod, who didn't want it, so Kiss had Peter Criss croak it out for them instead.
I really admire Kiss's skill as pasticheurs on this track, which captures the essence of Rod Stewart's style without being an outright copy of a particular song. Contrast with their wholesale ripoff of Def Leppard's "Pour Some Sugar On Me" for "Read My Body" in 1989.
