Everybody knows

We watched The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters last night about the continuing epic battle between Billy Mitchell and Steve Wiebe to record the world-record Donkey Kong high score.  What comes through pretty clearly is that Billy Mitchell is a jerk of the first order; he refuses even to meet his challenger in person.  But the true object of this post is a song on the soundtrack, Leonard Cohen's "Everybody Knows."  I have never actively listened to Cohen, just heard his songs here and there with vague approval.  Hearing "Everybody Knows" last night, though, I was struck by how apt a description it is of the last eight years of American political life.  I'm not the only one to think so: check out this video by "gopblows"--

I've been a fan of Cohen for a long time. One of my favorites is his work on the soundtrack of McCabe & Mrs. Miller. It's either out of print or never released, I've looked all over for it. I also think the songs from the movie are on his first album - Song of Leonard Cohen. He does a spoken word piece on the recent Herbie Hancock CD - The Joni Letters that I really like. I think the song Everybody Knows is also on the Pump the Volume movie with C Slater. Rufus Wainwright and Concrete Blonde do great versions of Everybody Knows. I think Concrete Blonde had a hit with it back in the early to mid 90s. LC's first album and Songs of Love and Hate are good places to start if you're looking for more. You know, in the back of my mind I was hearing a woman singing the chorus to
Everybody Knows, but I didn't think to follow that up. Concrete Blonde, of course. Haven't heard Rufus's version, maybe that's the song that will help me get into his music, which I haven't been able to yet.
